Why create partition & Common problems about making partition

We usually create at least two partitions for different usage, such as separating Operating System from personal documents, dual booting, storing classified documents, or music.

Many users think create partition is not difficult task because all Windows built in Disk Management allow us creating new partition easily. But on the contrary, making new partition is also a frequently asked question by the world wide Windows 7 users who use HP, DELL OEM machines.

Following two cases are from forums:
Image 1. There are already four existing primary partitions and one unallocated space, using Windows Disk Management to create new partition will receive the following error report:

Image 2. There are three primary partitions and one extended partition, so we can not create new partition anymore unless deleting one existing partition or more:

The terms of making new volume in Window 7 built-in Disk Management:

1. On a basic disk (MBR), it only allows four primary partitions or three primary partitions and one extended partition. In the extended partition, we could create as many logical partitions as we can.
2. Different from the first term, on a dynamic disk, we can create as many dynamic volumes as we can.
3. On a hard disk, there must be either unallocated (empty) space on the hard disk or free space within an extended partition on the hard disk.
4. Windows 7 partition can only create primary partition. (Creating logical partition is available when there are three primary partitions and unallocated space, then the unallocated space will be created as logical partition.)

Because of above 1st limitation, we got the error message 1 and suggested to convert basic disk to dynamic disk based on the 2nd term. And the 4th limitation leads us can not create new partition any more unless deleting one existing partition or more.

First circumstance:

Environment: There is no unallocated space on disk and only four primary partitions
Steps:

1. After launching AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition, we need specify the location of the new partition in disk partition map:



2. Right click H partition and choose "Create Partition" in menu list to get the following window.


• In partition map area, drag the border rightwards or leftwards to adjust the partition size
• In red area, changing drive letter in drop=down menu or defining a exact size is available
• Unfold the "Advanced" option, we could set partition label and file system as we wish
  (Note:Because the disk already contains the maximum number of partitions, so we can only create logical partition here. As you know, this is limited by Windows)




3. Back to the main interface, we see that there is a new L partition generated. To save changes, click "Apply" on the toolbar to see following change:

Second circumstance:

Environment: There is unallocated space on the disk
Steps:

1. In main interface, right click the unallocated space and choose "Create Partition" to get new window, for more detailed new partition info, refer to the 2nd step in first circumstance.



2. Back to the main window, preview the change in advance, and if any mistake, correct again by clicking "Undo", "Redo" or "Discard" button. To save change, click "Apply" to create partition.
